CHAPTER 23

LUCY

I arrive at Evan’s a little after six. I just wanted to get away from the house and smoke pot alone, but when I get there, his car’s out the front. He rarely takes time off work. He has one of those jobs that warrants constant communication, check-ins, talking to his guys. In all honesty, I’m not sure what his job is. I don’t ask too many questions for the fear of getting too close.

I don’t want to get close to anyone because they’d expect something from me. When you take, you also have to give for the relationship equilibrium, but if I am being honest, I’m not much of a giver. At least not in a deep sense. Depths elude me, and I am scared I will reach the bottom.

And when you reach the bottom, it’s a hard way to crawl back up.

I enter the house and sing out “hello,” but I get no response. Maybe Evan isn’t at home after all. Just as I’m about to enter the kitchen, Evan shows up, looking somewhat disheveled, and looks at me with his sleepy eyes. “Hey. What are you doing here?”

He’s topless and looking like a hot mess. I rarely find Evan in this state. I hope he’s okay.

“Hey.” I give him a smile, as I’m genuinely happy to see him. “I came by to hang out. Is it not a good time?”

He trots over to me and gives me a hug. “Oh, you know you’re always welcome here. Any time.”

That’s what I was afraid he’d say. He might think this is the time I’ll change my mind about us. That we’ll get closer and maybe have a legitimate relationship. All these months we’ve been seeing each other, I haven’t given an ounce of hope or a sign it would ever happen between us.

But today, his affection feels good. For the very first time, I appreciate that Evan welcomes me and wants my company. I'm feeling overwhelmed and I really need to unwind and hang out with my best friend.

“Thanks, Evan. I’ve had a bit of a shitty day,” I proclaim. I don’t tell him we had a party today or that I’ve met some of Lynn’s friends. He’d be hurt about not being invited. Evan takes my hand and pulls me toward his bedroom.

“Come here, sweet thing.”

We walk in and plop onto the bed. A bong is sitting on the table. Evan fiddles about with his supply and lights it before taking a deep inhale and passing it onto me. When I do the same, calmness rushes to my head and my body relaxes. Evan extends his arm and brings me closer to him. With my head on his shoulder, I can sense him breathe and feel the pulse of his heart. Today, it’s beating faster than usual.

It’s as if something has bothered him lately. But Evan is the type of guy who wouldn’t divulge his problems. He’d rather listen and be present, showing all the love he can give me.
